About

The secret to Drupal success is not so much a secret, as it is an under-utilized tool that is at the disposal of all Drupal users: The Drupal Community. Believe it or not, there are people out there who want to help you learn Drupal and use it well — people who have been where you are and want to share the knowledge they've learned. The community is a free resource, and who knows, you may even end up becoming friends or business partners with people you meet (true fact: Lullabot's co-founders met by talking in a drupal.org forum).

This full-day session will cover why the community is one of the best learning tools when using open source, and we'll spend hands-on time exploring and using our community tools like the issue queue, IRC, and Git, plus how to find the answers you're looking for, or the people who have those answers. This workshop will be useful to both Drupal newbies as well as people who have experience with Drupal, but not necessarily the community, or the tools we use.

The day will start off with an overview of the community, the resources we have, and how to communicate. We'll specifically spend time in the Drupal.org issue queue and learning the fun of using IRC (Internet Relay Chat). We'll then move on to getting everyone set up with a local development environment on their laptops, so we can really dig in in the afternoon. After our lunch break we'll come back and play with some essential tools for working with Drupal sites, as well working with the Drupal community, namely drush and Git. We'll spend time getting everything installed, and then get you up and running like a pro. You'll be more efficient in your own work, and ready to dive in to the community pool.
